We rate the Best Pet Hair Vacuum available in 2017

We all love our pets, right? They are so fluffy, and sweet, and funny, and mischievous… For most of us pets are not animals, they are family. In this article we look at the best pet hair vacuum available today.

But do you know what we hate? Pet hair. It is everywhere: on the floor, on the furniture, in the carpet pile and even on the walls. How many times did you curse the day you got your cat or dog trying to get rid of that stubborn pet hair? Of course in the end, having a pet far outweighs the annoyances of their hair. But that doesn’t mean you have to slave away cleaning their hair day in and day out.

There is a way how you can enjoy every second of having a pet. If you find the ideal vacuum cleaner, you can relax when you invite people to your house. You won’t be embarrassed by pet hair everywhere and you won’t be worried about your guest’s allergies to hair.

But finding the best vacuum cleaner for pets can be a daunting job. There are many kinds on the market at all price levels, but most of them under perform when it comes to getting rid of all that hair.

If you are trying to chose the one that will do its job, here is an article on the best pet vacuums on the market today.

Overview of the Top Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaners

Different Types of Pet Hair Vacuums

There are many models of vacuum cleaners specially designed to tackle animal hair. But when it comes to the types of those vacuums, they are basically just the types of all other vacuum cleaners.

Upright Vacuums. These vacuums are well-known for their powerful suction. They are great for cleaning carpets. However, you might need a brush roll that can be switched off when on hardwood floors. If you used an upright vacuum at least once in your life, then you know its disadvantages. It is usually very heavy. Also, it is difficult to clean in the corners of the room.

Canister Vacuums. This can clean virtually anything. This is the best vacuum for hair lurking in corners, on the sofa, other furniture and on the stairs. The biggest downside is the tank that you have to drag behind you.

Stick vacuums. These cleaners are definitely comfortable and easy to use. They are light, maneuverable and useful for a quick clean up. It’s the best vacuum for pet owners who often have an unexpected guest and don't want him to think they are scruffy. But a stick vacuum does not have the ability to clean all pet hair from all surfaces.

Handheld vacuums. While they cannot replace a full-sized cleaner, this model is best for cleaning furniture and tight corners. It is also a solution for vacuuming your car after your dog had a ride in it and left hair all over the seats.

Robotic vacuums. You may think that a robotic vacuum does not have enough power to suck all your cat’s hair. And while usually, it’s true, you may be surprised at some new models’ capabilities. Another advantage is that you don't need to clean at all, the robot will do everything for you. They are pricey, though.

If you or your guests have allergies then it’s worth getting a unit with a HEPA filter, as this filters all known allergens from the air.

Brands of Pet Hair Vacuums

There are many brands now that claim their vacuums are specially designed to clean pet hair and promises that you will forget about all the mess and inconvenience as soon as you buy one. But we all know how advertising works, right? Very few of those cleaners do what they are supposed to. Every dog or cat owner knows how hard it is to find a really great cleaner.

Here is a list of brands that are famous for making pet hair vacuums.

BISSELL. This brand has a vast selection of vacuums for pet hair. It is nice to have a big choice but the product line can also be a little daunting with so many models to choose from.

BISSELL has a special feature in their vacuums called Pet Turbo Eraser which has been created especially for houses with pets. Many of their models also clean your home from animal allergens by using a system of filters for that.

Miele. This brand has a series of cat and dog vacuums. There are many reasons why many pet owners choose Miele for their house. First of all, these vacuums have a great filtration system and awesome suction power. Their vacuums are very quiet. If you have a cat, you will understand how important it is. You will not have to lure your scared cat from under the sofa before every clean up. They are also very efficient.

Hoover. This is another company with “Perfect For Pets” vacuums. Their units are a good choice for pet owners because of stain and odor-fighting cleaning solutions.

Shark. You must have heard about this brand if you are looking for the best vacuum cleaner for pets. And its reputation is deserved. Shark vacuums are good at cleaning pet hair because of an amazing power brush attachment, powerful suction, and versatility. Some of them also have a special hardwood floor attachments which could make one of the shark models the best vacuum for pet hair on hardwood floors.

Now, here is the part where we will stop beating around the bush and finally get to the recommendations.

We have considered which models have the best pet vacuum reviews by owners when making the list, so you can be assured that these have been road tested by us and other real people.

Let us begin:

Dyson DC41 Animal Complete Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Dyson DC41 Animal Complete Upright Vacuum Cleaner

When you think of Dyson, the first thing that comes to mind is probably ingenious design. I know I do. This company’s products are modern, undeniably cool yet sophisticated.

Just look at the Dyson DC41 – a brilliant idea executed flawlessly. That is the reputation that Dyson has coined for itself since inception. As vacuums go, this model is perfect but the same cannot be said about its design

Most pet owners love this machine. It is powerful, reasonably light and pretty maneuverable. The head of this vacuum has an active base plate that automatically adjusts to the floor type. So, you don't even need to press the button when moving from carpet to floor - this smart vacuum knows what it's doing.

One of the most important factors for dog and cat owners is the suction of the machine. This vacuum is pretty powerful. If you think you have a clean floor now, Dyson DC41 will prove you wrong. It can find dirt and animal hair where another cleaner would have given up. Some best vacuum for pet hair reviews say that the suction becomes a little weaker with time, but that seems to be the problem of all vacuums more or less. And even if the suction diminishes after a year, you’ll still have pretty good suction.

Dyson managed to achieve this with their Radial Root Cyclone technology which remodels how the air flows through the machine. This cyclone captures allergens and expels clean air through its allergen filter. It also has a Mini turbine head for cleaning corners and other hard to reach places which work with an Instant Release High-Reach Wand that stretches up to 5 times its original length.

A tool bag comes with Dyson DC41 with all kinds of different brushes for beds, corners, and stairs. Pretty much any surface is a doddle for the Dyson.

Real word Dyson pet vacuum reviews also found the clear bin very useful. You can see when you need to empty it and how much dirt you cleaned.

Now a little about the cons. Sometimes it is hard to lock this vacuum in the upright position, so be careful when you store it, as it may fall. And the biggest disadvantage here is the price. Not everyone is ready to spend so much money on a cleaner but we think it’s worth it. This machine will last you for a good few years so consider it as an investment.

Why we love it

The vacuum is powerful, reasonably light and maneuverable. It comes with many useful features including:

  • Head adjusts depending on the floor type: The head of this vacuum has an active base plate that automatically adjusts to the floor type. So, you don't even need to press the button when moving from carpet to floor - this smart vacuum knows what it's doing.
  • Powerful suction that lasts long: One of the most important factors for dog and cat owners is the suction of the machine. This vacuum is pretty powerful. If you think you have a clean floor now, Dyson DC41 will prove you wrong. It can find dirt and animal hair where another cleaner would have given up.
  • Some best vacuum for pet hair reviews say that the suction becomes a little weaker with time, but that seems to be the problem of all vacuums more or less. And even if the suction diminishes after a year, you’ll still have pretty good suction. Dyson managed to achieve this with the patented Radial Root Cyclone technology which remodels how the air flows through the machine. This cyclone captures allergens and expels clean air through its allergen filter.
  • It also has a Mini turbine head for cleaning corners and other hard to reach places which work with an Instant Release High-Reach Wand that stretches up to 5 times its original length.
  • A tool bag comes with Dyson DC41 with all kinds of different brushes for beds, corners, and stairs. Pretty much any surface is a doddle for the Dyson.

Real word Dyson pet vacuum reviews also found the clear bin very useful. You can see when you need to empty it and how much dirt you cleaned.

Why we don't love it

  • Sometimes it is hard to lock this vacuum in the upright position, so be careful when you store it, as it may fall.
  • And the biggest disadvantage here is the price.
  • The design is a little disappointing.
  • Why doesn’t the wand have a comfortable and logical place for you to hold it?
  • Why isn’t there easier way of putting it in and out of the resting position?
  • For something that costs this much, I think there shouldn’t be any room for flaws like these.

And while not everyone is ready to spend so much money on a cleaner, we think it’s worth it.

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind Bagless Upright Vacuum, UH70210

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind Bagless Upright Vacuum, UH70210

This is a good and reliable cleaner, it’s also affordable if we compare it to the Dyson.

The suction power is good enough. It may leave some threads on the carpet, but they are easy to pick up with the hose attachment.

We really loved the automatic cord rewinder. Why don't all cleaners have it?

This is a bagless vacuum, so it doesn’t need any further replaceable parts. And the filters are easy to access and clean. The air-powered pet hand tool does its job well even with long pet hair.

It's pretty light and quite quiet. It is also easy to store because the handle folds down.

If you have hardwood floors, however, there is a possibility that this vacuum’s plastic wheels will scratch it. Another disadvantage is that the cord gets a little hot. According to the reviews, it’s also too short if you’re taller than average.

What we love

  • Good suction power: This model uses WindTunnel Technology, a proven system that channels air from vacuum nozzle to the capture reservoir. This enables it to clean on either side as well as it cleans in the middle of the vacuum head. The suction power created by the 12amp motor is well in excess of what’s required to remove pet hair without stalling deep in the carpet to lift loosened debris as well as dirt to transport it to the reservoir. The combination of a properly adjusted brush bar, well-designed air flow system and a powerful motor are the ingredients to achieving good suction power and the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind has all three.
  • Convenient cord retractor: Not having to wrap 25 feet of cord is great. Tapping on the pedal makes the cord zip inside the vacuum. You just need to stay clear of the cord when the retractor is activator. Makes us wish other cleaners had this feature.
  • Bagless vacuum: Being a bag-less vacuum, this model doesn’t need replaceable parts. Moreover, the filters are easy to access and clean while the air-powered hand tool does its job well even with long pet hair.
  • It's pretty light and quite quiet. It is also easy to store because the handle folds down.

What we don't like

  • If you have hardwood floors, however, there is a possibility that this vacuum’s plastic wheels will scratch it.
  • You get a maximum of 8-feet hose, 3-feet of which are permanently wrapped around the body. With only 5-feet to work with, it’s no wonder many customers couldn’t give it a five star rating.
  • Another disadvantage is that the cord gets a little hot.

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum

This cleaner was designed specially to pick up pet hair and it does an excellent job of it. You can use it for furniture, upholstery, stairs and even for your car. There are two different nozzles depending on the job at hand, but they are easy to change.

The vacuum works great and has great suction. Basically, it is everything you need from a handheld. It has a pleated post motor filter, a filter screen and a 16-foot power cord with a cord wrap system.

There is probably just one inconvenience. If you want to clean your floor with it, the air will come out pretty strong and blow hair around the room. It is also the loudest vacuum in our tests.

What we love

For pure suction, the Pet Hair Eraser is spectacular.

  • The top of the vacuum is wide and has soft bristles that get deep into the fabric for cleanup
  • At just 5 pounds, you should be able to use this cleaner easily without straining any muscles. It measures 10x5x8, which combined with its lightweight makes for a compact design that allows for easy storage.
  • The HEPA filter and filter screen go a long way in ensuring clean air in your home
  • There are two nozzles that magnetically attract pet hair and other dirt and are easy to change

What we don't like

  • The fact that it doesn’t come with extra attachments like a hose or crevice tool makes it a poor choice for tight areas
  • It takes 24 hours for a full charge to complete, which means a long time sitting on the charge between uses
  • If you want to clean your floor with it, the air will come out pretty strong and blow hair around the room.
  • It is also the loudest vacuum in our tests.

The one works great and has great suction. Basically, it is everything you need from a handheld. It has a pleated post motor filter; a filter screen and a 16-foot power cord with a cord wrap system.

BISSELL PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum, 81L2A

BISSELL PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum, 81L2A

If you think all stick vacuums can do is push the pet hair around the floor, this BISSELL is different.

It is light, easy to maneuver and it has surprisingly powerful suction for its size.

You can easily use it with only one hand and it is simple to empty it. There are even no bristles when vacuuming with this BISSELL.

Probably, the only thing that you might not like is the noise. Be prepared - it’s very loud. But for all the advantages and such a good price, this is a minor factor, we’d say.

What we loved

  • The PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor comes with a V-shaped nozzle that makes it easier to pick larger pieces of dirt and debris that other vacuum cleaners will leave behind.
  • It comes with a 20-foot cord which allows more room for movement when cleaning
  • It weighs only 7-pounds, thus eliminating the need to keep it sitting still. It maneuvers well, cleaning both carpet and hard surfaces.
  • The V-shape also allows for great suction power
  • The transparent canister is easy to empty
  • The QuickRelease Cord Wrap eliminates the need for winding up the cord manually

What we don't like

  • On the downside, this model is not equipped with a HEPA filter that prevents dust particles from entering the air or cyclonic action that ensures the pet hair and dirt go into the cup where it belongs.
  • Did we mention it's loud?

Eureka EasyClean Corded Hand-Held Vacuum, 71B

Eureka EasyClean Corded Hand-Held Vacuum, 71B

The stairs and upholstery are the two most neglected areas when it comes to removal of pet hair at home. The reason is simple – many hoovers have limited tools to clean up these two areas effectively.

The Eureka EasyClean is one of the cheapest cleaners in our tests and does a great job of cleaning the stairs as well as upholstery. It is powerful and easy to use

It is perfect to pick up occasional kitchen spill and kitty-litter dusting. Bear in mind this vacuum is for the occasional use. You can’t use it for cleaning your whole house - it will overheat. It performs really well for it’s intended use.

Weight wise it’s heavier than some other handhelds, but you won’t need to use it for a long time, just to pick up your pet hair here and there.

The cord is 20-foot long. And you can wrap it around the vacuum which makes it easy and convenient to store.

What we loved

  • The filter is washable while the vac is bag-less, thus lessening the operational costs
  • Crevice tool and flexible hose add to its versatility
  • It is lightweight and relatively quiet
  • It is equipped with Riser Visor, which makes cleaning vertical areas easy
  • It has strong suction
  • The cord is 20-foot long. And you can wrap it around the vacuum which makes it easy and convenient to store.

What we didn't like

  • It relies on rechargeable Lithium ion batteries with 18 volts. A full charge takes 3 hours and lasts for 15-20 minutes. That is a tad too low if you ask me. In addition, it only comes with one battery and you can get an additional one for $80.
  • It doesn’t come with many accessories, just the charger and manual
  • It struggles on contoured areas and as such, doesn’t work great in cars
  • There is no rewind feature

So, overall, this is a very good vacuum for the occasional clean up.

It is as convenient as it could be. It is bagless, cordless, simple to use and to clean. It is the first Stick Vacuum that has Hoover's Patented WindTunnel Technology. This vacuum can reach tight corners and under furniture.

  • It has a dust capacity of 0.23 gallons, which is fairly common for cordless vacuums
  • It features Cyclonic technology and washable filters. There is also a filter inside the dust cup which should be emptied and cleaned after every session. While the filtration isn’t as effective as HEPA, it does a good job of keeping dust particles from entering the air in your home.

  • Reasonably priced for its performance
  • The cord is 20-foot long. And you can wrap it around the vacuum which makes it easy and convenient to store.

  • The canister fills up quickly
  • It struggles on contoured areas and as such, doesn’t work great in cars
  • There is no rewind feature

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional (NV356E)

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional (NV356E)

This cleaner is another one that's well-loved by consumers. It claims to never lose suction like most vacuums do because of the Never Loses Suction Technology. It has an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology and a HEPA filter.

It’s rated high for its maneuverability. Many of the reviewers state that it outperformed the Dyson in our tests and we have to stay they're right in many respects, especially on the suction tests.

What we loved

  • The Cyclonic Technology plays a vital role in this vacuum. It separates fine dirt from air and thus prevents the filters from getting clogged. The no-loss tech ensures consistent cleaning performance as suction is not compromised.
  • The detachable canister is a God-send for many pet owners as it allows for cleaning of hard-to-reach areas.
  • Weighing just 7.5 pounds, this unit is designed to be carried around
  • It is equipped with a pre-motor felt filter, pre-motor foam filter as well as post-motor HEPA filter, thus allowing for clean air in your home. The filters need to be cleaned regularly to keep working properly.
  • Attachments included during purchase include a crevice tool for hard-to-reach areas and an attachment with micro-fiber pads for bare floor cleaning. It also comes with a pet power brush.

What we didn't like

  • Many customers have complained of the short hose that makes it hard to clean areas like under furniture.
  • It is also top-heavy and falls easy during use. Even for its price range, we would expect a more balanced design.
  • The width of the cleaning path is narrower than average meaning that it takes more time to clean a large area.

Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum, 3670G

Eureka Mighty Mite Canister Vacuum, 3670G

This vac is great for quick yet efficient cleaning of your home, car or garage from pet hair. It is quite light and portable for a canister. And you will be impressed how powerful this thing is.

What we loved

  • It features a 20-foot cord which comes in handy when you need to move around
  • It is powered by a 20-amp motor
  • Weighing less than 9-pounds, you can easily carry it up and down the stairs without pulling a muscle
  • Fingertip controls on the handle
  • It comes with a bare floor nozzle, a deluxe floor brush and an extension wand

What we don't like

  • Most reviewers on Amazon agree that the Eureka Mighty Mite is loud. You may have to look elsewhere if disruptive sound is a problem for you.
  • While it has stellar performance when it comes to cleaning floors, the same cannot be said for carpet cleaning
  • The width of the cleaning path is narrower than average meaning that it takes more time to clean a large area.

This is best recommended for someone in the market for a multipurpose vacuum that can blow away leaves in the garage one minute and pick up dust in the living room in the next.

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Bagged Upright, UH30310

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Bagged Upright, UH30310

This vacuum is P.A.W.S Pet Approved. It has Windtunnel system, but some say the suction isn’t so great.

It has an Activated Carbon HEPA Media Bag which filters dust and pollen - so great if you have allergies. It is also supposed to remove household odors. The bag is easy to access and clean, and you don't even have to touch it.

  • The onboard control mechanism makes navigation effortless
  • The robust nozzle is designed to accommodate and bolster suction efficiency

  • HEPA filter that is vital to removal of dust particles from air

What we don't like

  • It is not the most affordable option
  • The storage capacity is medium at best

This model is highly adaptable and what we love most about it is that it navigates exceptionally on carpeting compared to similar products in its price range.

iRobot Roomba 880 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

iRobot Roomba 880 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

It is perfect if you have a pet with not much hair and you don't like vacuuming. It also reduces allergies pretty well. Roomba has a complicated navigation system and can clean up to 3 rooms. There are special extractors that help to prevent pet hair and debris from clogging it.

  • It’s not the best for those who don’t like disruptive noise
  • The suction is relatively low

New Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum Cleaner

miele dog and cat canister vacuum

This is a tried and tested vacuum cleaner from Miele. It's the most expensive on the list but it's meant to stand the test of time with some users reporting years of top use from theirs. It's an extremely quiet vacuum so if you have pets who are nervous around cleaners then this might be just the ticket to calm their nerves.

It tackles smooth floors like hardwood and carpeted floors with ease using the appropriate attachments. Buying Guide

There are many factors to consider when buying a vacuum. But when you add a pet to that list, the task becomes really complicated. First of all, look at the models that are specially made for pet hair. This will make your choice easier by limiting the endless choice of cleaners out there. Here is a list of other things that are important to consider.

Vacuum cleaner features

Type of the cleaner: We have discussed them before. Decide which one works better for you. There is no right choice here, because it all depends on your needs and tastes.

Power: This is probably the key factor as pet hair is especially hard to clean. That is why you need something with great suction. Look for the wattage of the cleaner - the higher the stronger it is.

Capacity: Look how much dirt it can hold. If you have several animals, it may be annoying to clean the bag during a hoover job.

Filters: Pet hair vacuums must have good filters to be able to get rid of allergens in the air. You want a vacuum that complies with the HEPA standard, it means it can capture 99.97% of allergens.

Attachments: These are important if your house has different types of floors.

Bag or no bag: Many modern vacuums are bag-less, which has its advantages and disadvantages. The major advantage is that you don’t have to incur the cost of new ones. On the downside, they are messy to work with and are more likely to agitate your allergies. While it remains a debate of what works better, the truth is that it all comes down to personal preference.

HEPA filters: We strongly recommend buying something with this filtration system as it is designed to trap 99.97% of 0.3 microns or larger. This is particularly important if anyone in your family has allergies.

Brush agitator: This attachment is worth considering as it pulls dirt out of carpeting as well as loosen any pet hair embedded in carpets and upholstery. It comes in handy if you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot.

Some other features are also important, such as cord and hose length, price and accessories.

Type of pet you have

Some cats and dogs shed fur more than others while some have longer hair than others not to mention that breeds shed at different rates. Understanding such tendencies can go a long way in ensuring that you invest in the right vacuum.

Your home’s flooring and layout

The type of flooring in your house will have an impact on the type of vac you purchase. For instance, canisters work better on tiled and wooden floors as compared to deep carpeting.

Something with a rotating brush will do a great job of pulling hair from carpets and rugs but damage hardwood floors.

If your house has stairs, you will need to pay attention to the weight of vacuum. An extension hose and other attachments will also come in handy when cleaning the stairs.

Conclusion

I hope now you have a good idea of what is the best pet hair vacuum for you. Go read the reviews of the ones you like and do let us know which one you chose and how you're getting on with it in the comments below.
