Different Types of Pet Hair Vacuums

There are many models of vacuum cleaners specially designed to tackle animal hair. But when it comes to the general shapes of such vacuums, they are similar to other types of vacuum cleaners. From upright vacuum to robot vacuum, here are the main types of vacuums for pet hair:

Upright Vacuums

The upright vacuum is the most common type of vacuums for pet hair. In this design, the motor and suction head are part of the same unit, and you push the vacuum in front of you back and forward.

Pros:

Since an upright vacuum possesses a much wider cleaning path, it is best suited to clean floors. In addition, it is relatively affordable compared to the others. Upright vacuums are also easily stored since there are usually no accessories to remove and put away. It can also be easily used without preparations.

Cons:

Due to the rigidity and heaviness of this design, an upright vacuum is not very useful for furniture. The limited maneuverability might prevent you from reaching high and narrow places. The heaviness may also make it more difficult to carry up stairs. These vacuums also have a tendency to be noisier than other designs.

Canister Vacuums

Canister vacuums are higher-powered models with better suction and flow-rate that feature a relatively stationary base similar to an upright vacuum. However, in this design, there is an extra wand which is attached to the base through a hose. The base has wheels which allow you to drag the vacuum cleaner around.

Pros:

Since the wand is easily movable, you can reach higher areas if necessary. In addition, the wand can be equipped with various attachments including nozzles, brushes, or an upholstery tool, that can increase efficiency in different areas like carpets or rugs to get rid of stubborn pet hair.

This vacuum cleaner design is also much lighter and easier to carry. Pet owners might find that this type features better maneuverability in general. The extra power in this design also allows you to pick up extra thick pet hair.

Cons:

These vacuums may require some assembly before use. Hence, they are not as suitable for a quick use.

In addition, some pet owners dislike dragging the base behind the wand. The base may end up getting stuck in carpets or hit furniture and walls. Furthermore, though considered the best vacuums by many users they tend to be considerably pricier than other models.

Handheld Vacuums

Handheld vacuums are the most effective models in terms of accessibility. They are smaller, portable versions of the traditional vacuum cleaner.

Pros:

Since these models are so small, handheld vacuums are light, easy to carry around, and also easy to store. Their lightness also allows you to treat furniture and high places easily.

Handheld models are frequently cordless which makes it easier to move around in the house. This can be advantageous for elderly pet owners who may struggle with the bulkier and heavier traditional vacuums.

Despite their size many of the better brands are very powerful. This is crucial when trying to remove pet hair. The best handheld cleaners also include many attachments that are catered for different surfaces.

Cons:

Handheld vacuums are usually unsuitable for treating floors since the attachments are smaller and can only cover a small surface area compared to – say – an upright vacuum. In addition, since most handheld vacuums are cordless, you must remember to keep it charged.

Furthermore, as handheld vacuum cleaners are a newer type of vacuum, do be wary of imposter brands that sell ill-working versions of these models.

If the regular vacuum you own can handle the pet hair on the floor, you may consider investing in a handheld vacuum which will allow you to clean the pet hair in harder-to-reach areas. Additionally, some handheld vacuums can handle both wet and dry pet messes!

Robot Vacuums

Robot vacuums are self-operating vacuums cleaners that use intelligent programming to clean a user’s house without human control. These models are highly compact and low-effort but can help you get rid of pet hair nevertheless.

Pros:

Robot vacuums use intelligent programming, so you can set a schedule for it to clean the house. In addition, the sleek design allows them to vacuum pet hair under large furniture that may be difficult to reach with other models. Some of the best robot vacuums can also double-up as a mop.

Cons:

It sucks up everything in its path: Just as items can get stuck in traditional vacuums, robot vacuums will also pick up things like socks, pet toys or other small objects. Since the robot vacuum may not be intelligent enough to avoid these items, it may end up getting stuck and unless the user is there to remove the object, it will stop working for a while.

It can get stuck between furniture: Similarly, the vacuum may get stuck between or under furniture. Furthermore, since designers created smaller robot vacuums to allow them to move around tight spaces more easily, it is unable to contain large amounts of pet hair. It ends up requiring frequent emptying though some models are able to empty themselves automatically at their charging station when it becomes necessary.

Battery life: Another problem with robot vacuums is battery life. After cleaning, these vacuums must charge at their home base. However, if it gets lost while cleaning, it will end up stranded in the middle of the house.

It misses areas: One of the largest concerns about robot vacuums involve the fact that it does not completely solve the pet hair problem because the user would still need to vacuum the areas that it missed. Let’s be honest; they are not the best vacuums for pet hair in difficult-to-reach areas.

They take a while to clean: Additionally, although this type of vacuum cleaner is about as loud as a traditional vacuum, robot cleaners are slower and tend to run much longer, generally taking about 90 minutes or more. This would mean that you might have to deal with 90 minutes of vacuum white noise.

Finally, vacuum cleaners go for quite a high price.

Having said all that, there’s nothing like handing your vacuuming job to the robot and forgetting about it. We think it could be a small price to pay to help automate your life. With that in mind, we’ve hunted down the best robot vacuums for dog and cat hair.

Pro tip: If you or your guests have allergies then it’s worth getting a vacuum cleaner for pet hair with a HEPA filter, as this filters all known allergens from the sucked in air. The best vacuums for pet hair do have such filters in place.

Brands of Pet Hair Vacuums

There are many brands now that claim that their vacuums are especially designed to clean pet hair. But we all know how advertising works, right? Very few of those cleaners do what they are supposed to. Every dog or cat owner knows how hard it is to find a really great pet hair cleaner.

Here is a list of brands that are famous for making some of the best vacuums for pet hair.

BISSELL
This brand has a vast selection of vacuums that are designed to remove pet hair. It is nice to have a wide choice but the product line can also be a little daunting with so many models to choose from. BISSELL has a special feature in their vacuums called Pet Turbo Eraser which has been developed especially with pet owners in mind.

Miele
This brand has a series of cat and dog hair vacuums.
There are many reasons why many pet owners choose Miele. First of all, these vacuums have a great filtration system and awesome suction power. Moreover, their vacuum cleaners are very quiet. If you have a cat, you will understand how important that is. You will not have to lure your scared cat from under the sofa before every clean up.

Hoover
This is another company with a “Perfect For Pets” vacuum cleaner line. Their units are a good choice for pet owners because of their ease of use strong performance. Some of their models come with HEPA filtration, which can be a godsend for people with dog or cat hair allergy.

Shark
You must have heard about this brand if you are looking for the best vacuum cleaner for pets. And its reputation is deserved. Shark vacuums are good at cleaning pet hair because of an amazing power brush attachment, good suction, and versatility. Some of the Shark models also have a special hardwood floor attachment which makes them the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair on hardwood floors.

Now, here is the part where we will stop beating around the bush and finally get to the recommendations.

When making the following list, we have considered which models have the best pet vacuum cleaner reviews by actual owners, so you can be assured that these have been road tested by us and other real people.

Let us begin:

Dyson DC41 Animal Complete Upright Vacuum Cleaner

When you think of Dyson, the first thing that comes to mind is probably innovative design. This company’s products are modern, undeniably cool yet sophisticated.

Our first impression of the Dyson DC41 is: a brilliant idea executed nicely. It’s not a surprise because that is the reputation that Dyson has coined for itself since their very beginnings.

Most pet owners love this machine. It is powerful, reasonably light and pretty maneuverable. The head of this upright vacuum cleaner has an active base plate that automatically adjusts to the floor type. So you don’t even need to press the button when moving from carpet to floor – this well-thought-out vacuum knows what it’s doing.

One of the most important factors for dog and cat owners is the suction of the machine. This upright vacuum wont disappoint with weak suction; it is pretty powerful. If you think you have a clean floor now, the Dyson DC41 might prove you wrong! It can find dirt and animal hair where another cleaner would give up.

Note that some vacuum for pet hair reviews say that the suction becomes a little weaker with time, but that seems to be the problem of all vacuums for some reason. However, even if the suction diminishes after a year, you’ll still have pretty good suction with the Dyson DC41.

Dyson managed to achieve this with their Radial Root Cyclone technology which remodels how the air flows through the machine. This mechanism captures allergens and expels clean air through its allergen filter. The vacuum also has a Mini turbine head for cleaning corners and other hard to reach places. It works with an Instant Release High-Reach Wand that stretches up to 5 times its original length.

The tool bag that comes with the Dyson DC41 includes a dusting brush and other kinds of different brushes for beds, corners, and stairs. Pretty much any surface is a doddle for the Dyson.

The customers writing Dyson pet vacuum reviews also found the clear bin to be very useful. You can easily see when you need to empty it and how much dirt you have cleaned.

Now a little about the cons: Sometimes it is hard to lock this vacuum in the upright position, so be careful when you store it as it may fall. Also, the biggest disadvantage for many people is the price. Not everyone is ready to spend that much money on a cleaner but we think it’s worth it if you have the budget. This machine will last you for a good few years so consider it as an investment.

Why we love it:

The pet hair vacuum cleaner is powerful, reasonably light and maneuverable. It comes with many useful features including:

  • Head adjusts depending on the floor type: You don’t even need to press the button when moving from carpet to floor – this smart vacuum will adjust automatically.
  • Powerful suction that lasts long: This machine has more than enough suction to delight dog and cat owners.
  • The Mini turbine head for deep cleaning corners and other hard to reach places proves to be very useful.
  • The Dyson DC41 comes with a tool bag full of brushes for all sorts of cleaning situations and surfaces.

Why we don’t love it:

  • This vacuum easily falls over if you are not careful when locking it in upright position.
  • For an upright vacuum cleaner, it is on the expensive side.
  • The wand doesn’t have a comfortable and logical place to hold it.

Of course not everyone is ready to spend this much money on a vacuum cleaner even if it is a Dyson, but in general we think it’s worth it.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional NV356E

This cleaner is another one that’s well-loved by consumers. It claims to keep its suction power unlike most vacuums thanks to the “Never Loses Suction Technology”. The Shark Navigator also comes with Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology and a HEPA filter.

This upright vacuum model is rated high by users for its maneuverability. Many of the reviewers state that it outperformed the Dyson, and we have to say they’re right in many respects, especially on the suction tests. But is it enough to be named best vacuum for pet hair?

What we loved:

  • The Cyclonic Technology plays a vital role in this vacuum. It separates fine dirt from air and thus prevents the filters from getting clogged. The no-loss technology ensures consistent deep cleaning performance as suction is not compromised.
  • The detachable canister is a big advantage for many pet owners as it allows for cleaning of hard-to-reach areas.
  • Weighing just 7.5 pounds, this vacuum cleaner is definitely designed to be carried around.
  • The Shark Navigator is equipped with a pre-motor felt filter, pre-motor foam filter as well as post-motor HEPA filter, thus allowing for clean air in your home. These filters need to be cleaned regularly to keep working properly.
  • A variety of tools is included in the package. For example, a crevice tool for hard-to-reach areas and an attachment with micro-fiber pads for bare floor cleaning. It also comes with a pet power brush.

What we didn’t like:

  • Many customers have complained about the short hose that makes it hard to pick up pet hair in areas such as below large furniture.
  • It is also top-heavy and can easily tip over if one is not careful. A more balanced design would have been better.
  • The width of the cleaning path is narrower than average meaning that it takes more time to clean a large area.

Despite the drawbacks, a large majority of users have been very happy with this neat vacuum cleaner!

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum, Corded, 33A1

As the name of this handheld vacuum cleaner indicates, it was especially designed for removing pet hair. And it does an excellent job of it! Due to it’s size it makes vacuuming furniture, upholstery, stairs and even your car very easy. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser comes with two different nozzles which can be switched depending on the job at hand.

Despite being handheld device, this vacuum works great and has good suction. Basically, it has everything you need from a handheld, including a pleated post motor filter, a filter screen and a 16-foot power cord with a cord wrap system.

There are probably just one or two inconveniences. If you want to clean your floor with it, the air will come out pretty strong and blow around the room. It is also the loudest vacuum in our tests.

What we love:

  • For pure suction, the Pet Hair Eraser is spectacular.
  • The top of the vacuum is wide and has soft bristles that get deep into the fabric for a deep cleanup.
  • At just 5 pounds, you should be able to use this cleaner easily without straining any muscles. It measures 10x5x8 which, combined with its lightweight makes for a compact design that allows for easy storage.
  • The HEPA filtration and filter screen go a long way in ensuring clean air in your home.
  • There are two nozzles that magnetically attract pet hair and other dirt and which are easy to change.
  • The price is hard to beat, even for a handheld vacuum.

What we don’t like:

  • Some extra attachments would have been nice, despite the very economic price point.
  • It is almost too powerful! The air flow coming out of the Bissell is pretty strong and it makes quite some noise.
  • Despite being a handheld vacuum, it is not battery powered and thus less portable than other similar models. However, not having to charge it is also seen as an advantage by some customers.

This is the best handheld vacuum cleaner in our ranking. It is very versatile and has great suction. Basically, it is everything you need from a handheld for a competitive price.

Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind Corded Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner with HEPA Media Filtration, UH71250

The Hoover Whole House Rewind is a good and reliable piece of technology which is also very affordable at the same time (especially if we compare it to the Dyson).

This model uses WindTunnel Technology, a proven system that channels air from vacuum nozzle to the capture reservoir. This enables it to clean on either side as well as it cleans in the middle of the vacuum head. The suction power created by the 12-amp motor is well in excess of what’s required to remove pet hair without stalling deep in the carpet. It can easily lift loosened debris as well as dirt. The combination of a properly adjusted brush bar, well-designed air flow system and a powerful motor are the ingredients to achieving good suction power and the Hoover WindTunnel 2 Whole House Rewind has all three.

Apart from that, w really loved the automatic cord re-winder. Why don’t all cleaners have it?

This is a bag-less vacuum cleaner, so it doesn’t need any further purchases. The filters are easy to access and clean. Also, the air-powered pet hand tool does its job well even with long pet hair.

The Hoover is light and pretty quiet. It is also easy to store because the handle folds down.

If you have hardwood floors, however, there is a possibility that this vacuum’s plastic wheels will scratch it. Another disadvantage is that the cord gets a little hot. According to the reviews, it might also be too short if you’re taller than average.

What we love:

  • Good suction power due to its Wind Tunnel 2 technology.
  • Convenient cord retractor: Not having to wrap 25 feet of cord is great. Tapping on the pedal makes the cord zip inside the vacuum. You just need to stay clear of the cord when the retractor is activator. Makes us wish other cleaners had this feature.
  • Being a bag-less vacuum, you don’t need to purchase disposable bags. Moreover, the filters can be accessed and cleaned by yourself.
  • This Hoover model is lightweight and not too noisy.
  • The well-designed handle allows easy storage.

What we don’t like:

  • This might not be the best vacuum for hardwood floors, since the plastic wheels might scratch wooden floors. Keep that in mind when purchasing!
  • The plastic hinges can break if not handled with care.
  • Another reported con is that the cord can get a little hot.

This vacuum cleaner is decent, especially for its price but if you have wooden floors that can be easily scratched, you might want to opt for another model. This one shines on when used on carpets though.

Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hardwood Floor Bagless Cleaner, 81L2A

If you think all stick vacuums can do is push the pet hair around the floor, this BISSELL vacuum cleaner will prove you wrong.

The PowerEdge Pet is light, easy to maneuver and it has surprisingly powerful suction for its size. You can easily use it with only one hand and it is simple to empty it.

Probably, the only thing that you might not like is the noise. Be prepared – it’s very loud. But if you can over-look that factor, this vacuum cleaner comes with a lot of advantages and a very good price.

What we loved:

  • The PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor comes with a V-shaped nozzle that makes it easier to pick up larger pieces of dirt and debris that other vacuum cleaners will leave behind.
  • It comes with a 20-foot cord which allows more room for movement when cleaning.
  • The Bissell weighs only 7-pounds. It maneuvers well and is ideal for deep cleaning pet hair from both carpet and hard surfaces.
  • The special V-shape of this upright vacuum allows for great suction power.
  • The transparent canister is easy to empty.
  • The QuickRelease Cord Wrap eliminates the need for winding up the cord manually.

What we don’t like:

  • On the downside, this model is not equipped with a HEPA filter that prevents dust particles from entering the air.
  • Did we mention it’s loud?

This is definitely one of the best stick vacuums around. It does have a few drawbacks but nobody is perfect, right?

Eureka EasyClean Lightweight Handheld Vacuum Cleaner 71B

The stairs and upholstery are the two most neglected areas when it comes to the removal of pet hair at home. The reason is simple – many vacuum cleaners have limited tools to clean up these two areas effectively.

The Eureka EasyClean is one of the cheapest cleaners in our tests and does a great job of cleaning the stairs as well as upholstery. It is both powerful and easy to use.

This handheld vacuum is perfect to pick up occasional kitchen spill and kitty-litter dusting. Bear in mind this vacuum is for the occasional use. You can’t use it for cleaning your whole house – it will overheat. That being said, it performs really well for it’s intended use.

Weight wise it’s heavier than some other handhelds, but you won’t need to use it for a long time, just to pick up your pet hair here and there.
The cord is 20-foot long. And you can wrap it around the vacuum which makes it easy and convenient to store.

What we loved:

  • The filter of this bag-less vacuum cleaner is washable, resulting in low operational costs.
  • Crevice tool and a flexible hose add to its versatility.
  • The Eureka is lightweight and relatively quiet even though it has strong suction.
  • It is equipped with Riser Visor, which makes cleaning vertical areas easy.
  • The 20-foot long cord makes it very portable despite not being battery-powered.

What we didn’t like:

  • It doesn’t come with many accessories and tools.
  • It struggles on contoured areas and as such, doesn’t work great in cars.
  • There is no cord rewind feature.

While not the best handheld out there, it is a simple but very good vacuum for the occasional clean up, especially for this price.

Other Top Vacuums For Pet Hair

Hoover Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, BH50010

This stick vacuum cleaner is as convenient as it could be. It is bag-less, cordless, simple to use and clean. It is the first Stick Vacuum that has Hoover’s patented WindTunnel Technology. Moreover, this vacuum can reach tight corners and under furniture.

What we loved:

  • The Hoover Linx uses WindTunnel Technology with one air channel, allowing for decent suction power that gathers most of the dirt with one swipe.
  • It features Cyclonic technology and washable filters. There is also a filter inside the dust cup which should be emptied and cleaned after every session. While the filtration isn’t as effective as HEPA, it does a good job of keeping dust particles from entering the air in your home.
  • Nozzle width of 11 inches, which covers more space.
  • Reasonably priced for its performance.

What we didn’t like:

  • It is somewhat messy as it doesn’t have a rewind feature.
  • The canister of this upright vacuum fills up quickly. It has a dust capacity of 0.23 gallons, which – to be fair – is quite common for cordless vacuums.

This Hoover vacuum cleaner is very popular, despite some disadvantages over other models. The price makes up for much of it!

Eureka Mighty Mite 3670G Corded Canister Vacuum Cleaner, 3670G

This vacuum cleaner is great for quick, yet efficient cleaning of your home, car or garage from pet hair. It is quite light and portable for a canister vacuum. And you will be impressed how powerful this thing is.

What we loved:

  • The MightyMite 3670G features a 20-foot cord which comes in handy when you need to move around.
  • It is powered by a strong 20-amp motor.
  • Weighing less than 9-pounds, you can easily carry it up and down the stairs without pulling a muscle.
  • Fingertip controls on the handle.
  • It comes with a bare floor nozzle, a deluxe floor brush and an extension wand.

What we don’t like:

  • Most reviewers on Amazon agree that the Eureka Mighty Mite is loud. You may have to look elsewhere if disruptive sound is a problem for you.
  • While it has stellar performance when it comes to cleaning floors, the same cannot be said for carpet cleaning.
  • The width of the cleaning path is narrower than average meaning that it takes more time to clean a large area.

This is most recommended for someone in the market for a multipurpose vacuum cleaner that can blow away leaves in the garage one minute and pick up dust in the living room in the next.

iRobot Roomba 960 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with Wifi

The iRobot Roomba is perfect if you don’t like vacuuming and your pet isn’t afraid of robot cleaners. It has a sophisticated navigation system and can clean up to 3 rooms. It features special extractors that help to prevent pet hair and debris from clogging it.

What we loved:

  • The iRobot Roomba 960 has the patented AeroForce Performance Cleaning System that ensures more than just decent pet hair removal.
  • Its low-slung design and round shape make it adept at navigating furniture, corners and other obstacles. The rotating brushes do a great job of cleaning tight edges.
  • It is well-designed with four control buttons, large LED segment display that shows time and day of the week as well as several indicator lights.
  • It comes with a compact docking station.
  • Some of the accessories include a spare filter and a remote control. There is also an optional iRobot Wireless Command Control Center.
  • It is equipped with dirt sensor technology.

What we didn’t like:

  • Bump steering is rather clunky.
  • The Roomba might not the best vacuum for those who can’t stand white-noise for a long time.
  • The suction is relatively low compared to other vacuums.

Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t love to be able to delegate the vacuuming? Convenience comes at a price, but can also save you a lot of time.

New Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum Cleaner

This is a tried and tested vacuum cleaner from Miele. It’s the most expensive on the list but it’s meant to stand the test of time with some users reporting years of top use from theirs. It’s an extremely quiet vacuum so if you have pets who are nervous around cleaners then this might be just the ticket to calm their nerves.

It tackles smooth floors like hardwood and carpeted floors with ease using the appropriate attachments. We were also very impressed that no dust seemed to escape which adds to the fact that the Miele Complete C3 comes as one of the highest rated vacuums when tackling allergens in the air. If you can afford it, go for this one, you won’t be disappointed.

What we loved:

  • This vacuum is equipped with Miele’s sealed 12-stage Air Clean System that retains up to 99.9% of the particles at 0.3 micron. The system consists of an AirClean Filter and an AirClean FilterBag, which are perfect for those with allergies or pets.

This 2-in-1 vacuum is able to stand upright, or even be moved easily for more portable cleaning if you need. On top of that, even when the dust container is completely full, you won’t lose any suction, and don’t have to empty it right away either. Just dump the canister when you’re done vacuuming.

What we loved:

  • The Premium Pet Power Brush is amazing at picking up hair and debris, and deep cleans dander from all surfaces.
  • The L.E.D Lights help you see dirt in hard to reach places.
  • The Shark maneuvers around furniture like a breeze.

What we didn’t dig so much:

  • The filters can clog up pretty quickly, but that depends on how dirty the job is.
  • If the vacuum is clogged then the suction is reduced, so make sure you clean it after every clean.

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional Vacuum (NV370)

This Shark Navigator is the original full-sized lift-away vacuum cleaner. It includes a canister that detaches so you can reach even the hardest areas. Use it for your pets with the motorized brush to clean on all surfaces, even on hardwood floors. Don’t worry about difficult controls either, since everything works just with a flick of your fingers, sucking up 99.9% of allergens and leaving your home clean.

It’s amazing how easy this vacuum is to use, and how versatile it ends up being. People love that you can use it anywhere and on any surface, but when you use it on carpets, they even become fluffier thanks to the brush pattern. Just push the button to change modes right from the handle and get vacuuming.

What we loved:

  • This vacuum for pet hair worked really well on our hardwood floors.
  • The HEPA Filter did a great job of removing all pet dander in the house.
  • The lights on the head enable you to see hair in dark areas.

What we didn’t dig so much:

  • It’s a tad on the heavy side even for an upright vacuum.
  • The attachments aren’t stored on the vacuum itself, so you need to find some extra storage space for them.

Some reviewers say this is one of the best vacuums they’ve used and we can see why.

Shark DuoClean Rocket Corded Ultralight Vacuum (HV382)

Let’s get to a handheld vacuum: the Shark DuoClean Rocket. Thanks to the DuoClean Technology, you’ll have a bristle brush that will deep clean carpets, along with a soft brush roll to grab any larger particles or pet hair clumps.

The great thing about this vacuum cleaner is that it’s lightweight and converts into a hand vacuum that you can use anywhere. Pet owners especially love the pet multi-tool to catch pet hair on all surfaces, along with the duster crevice tool, upholstery tool, and wall mount storage hook. You can even use the included LED lights to spot hidden dust anywhere in your home.

Another great thing about this handheld vacuum is the fact that you can switch between different settings without pausing thanks to how easily accessible everything is. Even on the lower power levels, you’ll be surprised at the suction power too, especially since this is a smaller vacuum compared to others. The size is great for storage and usage as well, so hang it up wherever you have a little space! Overall, all this makes this model one of the best handheld vacs currently available.

What we loved:

  • A Pet Power Brush is included which picks up pet hair and debris, and deep cleans dander from even the hardest reached surfaces.
  • It’s ultra-lightweight – it converts into a 4.6lbs hand vacuum for versatile above-floor cleaning.

What we didn’t dig so much:

  • If you have long hair, then the rollers can get clogged up. A tool is provided to cut the hair though, which was great.
  • Some think it’s noisier than other vacs but we think it’s comparable to the rest on offer from Shark.

This little machine is definitely one of the best vacuums in its category.

Our pick of the top 5 best Dyson vacuum cleaners for pet hair

dyson logo

Dyson prides themselves on being a team of design engineers who are committed to making functional but stylish products to help you in your everyday life. Dyson has been working on their ideas for a while, beginning in 1978 when founder James Dyson became frustrated with the performance of his own vacuum cleaner. When he took it apart and found that it was clogged, he set to work on his own vacuums. After 5 years and a total of 5,127 prototypes, he finally had the world’s first bag-less model.

After a huge success in Japan, James Dyson finally created Dyson Ltd in 1993, and even set up his own research center and factory. The Dual Cyclone was finally created to use 100% suction at all times, cleaning up even the most difficult to get dirt in your home. Today, Dyson is sold all over the world, and for good reason. These vacuums are made by engineers and scientists to give you the edge when it comes to your cleaning. Unsurprisingly, they are thus considered the best vacuums by many. Not only does Dyson sell vacuums though, but also air filters, fans, and humidifiers too. If there are ever any problems with their products, Dyson experts are available to help you so that your vacuum cleaner should continue running for years to come.

Without a cord to fool around with and with power buttons right at your fingertips, you’ll be able to finish up in no time.

What we loved:

  • This bad boy sucked like crazy for a full 40 minutes on one charge, more than enough to clean your whole house.

Buying Guide

There are many factors to consider when buying a vacuum. But when you add pet hair to that list, the task can become really complicated.

We recommend to first of all, look at the models that are specially made for pet hair. Vacuums for pet hair usually have specific features and it will make your selection easier by limiting the endless choice of cleaners out there. Here is a list of other things that are important to consider when choosing.

How to choose a vacuum

Ultimately, your vacuum choice should suit the problems and needs that you have. There are various factors that can affect this.

How big is the hair and dander problem?

Different vacuums should be chosen for different reasons. If you mainly have a pet hair issue on the floors, you should choose an upright vacuum. However, if you have heavy shedders in the family, a canister vacuum could be the better option.

Now, if you want to remove pet hair in hard-to-reach places and furniture, you should choose a handheld vacuum. For those you have little time to remove pet hair, you could choose a robot vacuum to help regularly clean your house and reduce some cleaning on your part.

All in all, it is important to pinpoint the main pet hair issue and consider which model will most effectively solve your problem.

Should you choose a corded or cordless version?

It is important to consider your maneuverability needs. Cordless vacuums will allow you to move more easily and allow you to access harder-to-reach places. However, corded vacuums tend to be more powerful and can do more heavy-duty work.

Why attachments can be a pain or a godsend

Attachments can allow for specialized treatments to different surfaces like carpets or rugs and in the process increase cleaning efficiency. You should consider if you have particular needs that can only be solved with particular attachments and tools.

What is your budget?

You should consider how much money you would like to spend on your vacuum. Some brands are much pricier than others but may provide better cleaning. Ultimately, it depends on how much you can and want to spend on the vacuum.

Vacuum cleaner features

Types: As we have discussed before, there are various types of vacuum cleaners. Decide which one works best for you. There is no right choice here, because it all depends on your needs and tastes. The best vacuum for one person might not be the best vacuum for another person.

Power: This is probably the key factor as pet hair is especially hard to clean. That is why you need something with great suction. Look for the wattage of the cleaner – the higher the stronger it is.

Capacity: Look how much dirt it can hold. If you have several animals, it may get annoying when you have to clean the bag during a hoover job.

Filters: The best vacuums for pet hair have good filters to be able to get rid of allergens in the air. You want a vacuum that complies with the HEPA filtration standard, which means that it means it can capture 99.97% of allergens.

Attachments and tools: These are important if your house has different types of floors. They will also help you remove pet hair from different types of places.

Bag or no bag: Many modern vacuums are bag-less, which has its advantages and disadvantages. The major advantage is that you don’t have to pay the cost of new ones. On the downside, they can be messy to work with and are more likely to agitate your allergies. While it remains a debate of what works better, the truth is that it all comes down to personal preference.

Brush agitator: This attachment is worth considering as it pulls dirt out of carpeting as well as loosen any pet hair embedded in carpets and upholstery. It comes in handy if you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot.

Some other features are also important, such as cord and hose length, price and accessories.

Type of pet you have

Some cats and dogs shed fur more than others. Also, different breeds shed at different rates. Some pets have longer hair than others. Understanding such tendencies can go a long way in ensuring that you invest in the right vacuum cleaner.

Your home’s flooring and layout

The type of flooring in your house will have an impact on the type of vac you should purchase. For instance, canisters work better on tiled and wooden floors as compared to deep carpeting.

Something with a rotating brush will do a great job of pulling hair from carpets and rugs but could damage hardwood floors.

If your house has stairs, you will need to pay particular attention to the weight of vacuum. An extension hose and other attachments will also come in handy when cleaning the stairs.

Conclusion

I hope now you have a good idea of what is the best pet hair vacuum for you. Go read the reviews of the ones you like and do let us know which one you chose and how you’re getting on with it in the comments below.
