Our Dog Food Reviews Will Help You Find The Right Food For Your Pup
Choosing the right dog food can set your dog up for a long and healthy life. There are many types of dog food on the market, from the really cheap (and sometimes nasty) to the pricy and top end of the dog food market.
We would all love to feed our dogs the very best food, and we start out with the best intentions, but once we realise how much food will actually cost us each month we consider cheaper alternatives.
That’s why at Pet Gear Lab we review the widest range of dog food on the market so that you can choose what dog food is right for your puppy to when he or she is an old pooch.
The following items represent some of Pet Gear Lab’s most frequently asked questions about how to choose a dog food.

Choosing the right dog food seems so confusing. How can I learn the basics?
Watch Dr. Karen Becker’s short video and go shopping with her as she presents the basics on how to choose a dog food.
There are so many dog foods to pick from, can you help me find the best one for my pet?
At the moment we only review and test dog foods that are commercially available on the market. That means that we can’t provide a custom dog food yet, but there is a service called Tails in the UK that does this. Maybe there’s something similar in the USA? If you know, please let us know!
What’s the best way to pick one myself?
Check out our top rated dog foods and choose one that suits your needs.
Or for help finding a special type, see our Best Dog Foods page for links to some of our suggested products.
And be sure to also check the comments at the end of each review to see what our readers (the real experts) have to say, too.
Can you compare two different dog foods for me?
Yes we can! When you read our review of dog food, have a look at the top button that says compare. This is then added to your compare chart where you can look at different dog foods side by side.
Be aware that dogs respond to different types of food differently, so it’s important that you test the food on your dog for a few days before making your decision. Always consult a VET before you make a drastic change to your pet’s diet!
What does the Pet Gear Lab folk feed his own dog?
My favourite dog food at the moment is Burns, but Winnie also loves to try Harringtons.
My dog has a specific health problem. Can you recommend a food that could help his condition?
Unfortunately, since I’m not a veterinarian, you’ve asked a question I don’t feel qualified to answer. Although I’m sure there are specific dog foods that could help, we try to limit our services to reading and interpreting pet food labels only.
We never attempt to judge the ability of any dog food to address certain problems or deliver specific health benefits.
What’s better… canned or dry dog food?
Dry kibbles are the most popular dog foods in use and that is because they are relatively inexpensive, contain all the vitamins and minerals your dog needs (for the most part – check our reviews) and they also clean your dogs teeth when they chew harder materials.
Having said that canned foods can be some of the best (and most overlooked) choices available.
Although there are situations when feeding either one might be the better choice, there are also times when mixing the two together (a process known as topping) makes an especially tasty meal.
